Karl Eckstein, born in 1949, Swiss-Russian dual citizen, studied law in Basel (lic. iur. 1975; Dr. iur. 1979), was admitted to the bar in 1980 and habilitated in Moscow (Prof. iur. 2001).

Karl Eckstein is married, has three children and currently lives in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

He is one of the few Swiss nationals to have lived in Russia before the fall of the Iron Curtain.
